Follow me today as I explore the up and coming Fairfax Avenue in West Hollywood. As you all know, I love a good cuppa Joe and caffeine is a necessity in my daily adventures. I'm lucky enough to have some of the best coffee right on my doorstep here, a trip to Mojo on Beverly Boulevard is part of my daily routine and the Starbucks in Barnes & Noble at The Grove is where I indulge in reading in my downtime.
Today however is a change for me, it's time for a new routine and I start my morning at Cofax, an independent coffee shop on Fairfax Avenue. They pride themselves on serving up outstanding coffee, handcrafted baked goods and an unequaled breakfast burrito. There's a heatwave in LA (typical!) so I stay on the safe side and order a large iced coffee to go.
Caffeine addiction filled and now it's time to shop. In case you didn't know, I have a slight shopping addiction too. I take after my mum who hoards clothes in the trunk of her car. I'm a huge fan of vintage clothing and spend a lot of time at the Jewish Council on Fairfax Avenue sourcing out oversized oxford shirts and t-shirts. I suggest getting there early in the morning as it seems to be a favourite of almost everyone in West Hollywood. When they roll out a new rack of clothes at the Jewish Council it can be quite the mob scene, the claws come out and if you're not paying attention then you may just walk away empty handed. It's hit or miss here but when it's a hit, it can be really amazing.
If you're on the hunt for something really special and luxurious then a trip to Catwalk is going to be the highlight of your day. Founded by Michelle Webb and Renee Johnston, Catwalk is one of the most exclusive and luxury vintage stores in the city. Chanel, Dior & Prada a plenty, you're sure to find something here to suit your taste. I could spend all day here browsing the racks and filling my head full of inspiration. This is where many designers start the journey into their next collection and where some of the most well known actresses come to shop for that special Academy Awards dress. You'll be excited to know that Catwalk will be launching their new online shopping experience soon, bookmark this website now and keep your eyes peeled!
The shopping doesn't end there, I decide to explore some of the new hipster stores popping up in the area. There's a queue outside Supreme so I head down the street to check it out and although it's not my style, it's clear to me that Supreme really is one of the most happening brands of our time.
Supreme started out in New York City on Lafayette Street and they now have 9 stores worldwide. Over their twenty one year history, they have worked with some of our generation's most groundbreaking designers, artists, photographers and musicians. Clothing here sells out rapidly in stores and online so I recommend signing up to their mailing list to be kept informed of upcoming collections and collaborations.
I fancy a nibble and decide to call into Canter's Deli. Canter's has been around since the 1940s and is usually packed full of locals. It's a well known celebrity hangout that was brought to fame by the adjoining Kabitz Room where music legends performed late night gigs. President Barack Obama paid a visit on a recent trip to LA and other celebrity fans include Taylor Swift and Mick Jagger. Marilyn Monroe mentioned Canter's as one of her favourite spots in LA and spent many evenings here.
I stop off at the bakery counter and point through the glass case at several items which include strawberry cheesecake, rainbow cake and linzer cookies. Then it's over to the deli counter where I order a pastrami sandwich, a well-known favourite amongst locals. I take my order to go and decide to head back home to share it with my friends.
It's not my first visit to Canters and most certainly will not be my last. The interior here hasn't changed since they opened and a step through the doors of Canter's is a step back in time. I appreciate their ethics and how they stay true to their image. A trip to Canter's is a must when you're in LA!
JON & VINNY'S
On my route home I stop off to look through the window at this chic new Italian restaurant. My eyes light up as I spot talented bakers kneading dough and prepping for a busy evening. I've heard great things about Jon & Vinny's and have now added it to my 'You Gotta Eat Here' list. Jon & Vinny's is brought to us by Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, the same duo behind Animal, Son of a Gun and Trois Mec. Reservations are necessary as this is one of the most hopping joints in town right now. They also have a BREAKFAST PIZZA here (yes, you read that correctly). I'm dying to try it and will be updating this as soon as I have the chance.
Fairfax Avenue is definitely not the most visually appealing street in West Hollywood but it's home to some of the most interesting, cutting edge, happening fashion brands and some of the most delicious food. It's up and coming fast and definitely deserves a place on your travel itinerary.
