Feeling grotty, dehydrated and jet lagged? Me too.
I've just touched down in Los Angeles after travelling for the past 24 hours. I took off from Dublin and travelled to Philadelphia for a four hour layover before hopping on another flight to LAX.
There's a cool and refreshing summer night's breeze in the air. Unfortunately I'm feeling everything but refreshed after such a long journey. I have two black bags hanging from my eyes, my lips are chapped and my skin is dehydrated and extremely dry.
As a frequent flyer my skin goes through stages like this and I have had to deal with many post-flight breakouts. I have decided to share a few of my favourite products with you today, products I have used to settle and rehydrate my tired skin after so long up in the sky. With these skin saviours I can now complete my post-flight skincare regime in record breaking time and begin my trip fresh faced and energised. Most of these products are available in handy travel sizes - making them perfect for popping into your hand luggage.
Time to sort myself out before stepping out in Hollywood...
Let's start with the lips, shall we? The award winning Crème de la Mer Lip Balm sorts me out in a heartbeat. Having used many lip balms, I found that this one works best for me. Bare in mind that the skin on our lips turns over at four times the rate of facial skin which results in lips being left susceptible to skin that is ragged and rough. A unique lip balm unlike any other on the market, the exclusive patented complex of 'lip lipid' in Crème de la Mer Lip Balm helps to infuse moisture back into the lips leaving them supple and smooth. Mint is added to sooth any lip discomfort. I recommend applying when necessary, a little goes a long way with this product.
Next up - all hands on deck! My hands are often left dry and peeling and as Karen Smith once said "my nail beds suck". To combat this problem, I've been using Aesop's Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm. A trusted and popular brand, this product come highly sought-after and has been formulated for frequent use.
A brand I'm liking a lot lately is This Works. I first came across the brand when I tried some of their relaxation products to aid with sleeping and it's true, they really do work. This Works recently launched a line called 'Energy Bank', a range including various moisturisers, hand creams and haircare products. I have just tested out the Energy Bank Body Makeover and the first thing I notice is the smell - pleasant and not too strong. The formula improves skin tone and elasticity and also works to nourish and moisturise. It's ideal for stretch marks during pregnancy and although I'm not pregnant and never will be, I'm still getting the benefits from using this. At 120ml, it's too big for hand luggage but if you really suffer onboard, I recommend taking a little jar to keep you moisturised throughout the journey.
Post flight spritz? This is one of the most important steps in my post-flight beauty regime. My favourite product to freshen up is the Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin cologne. This is the brand's signature fragrance and the first in the Jo Malone range that I ever smelt, a scent that's stuck with me throughout the years. I'm also a big fan of the Pomegranate Noir and Oud & Bergamot - to be honest I haven't come across a Jo Malone fragrance that I dislike! The refreshing and energising unisex Lime Basil & Mandarin fragrance is available in both 30ml and 100ml making it easy to pop into your hand luggage. Freshen up in-transit or on arrival, I'm sure your fellow passengers will be grateful. With top notes of mandarin and basil and a base note of amber wood, this uplifting fragrance will transport your mind to the beach.
Let's talk about post-flight relaxation now. It's important to recoup and rest up after flying and there's no better way to relax than to take a bath and light one of the new Neom Organics Intensive Skincare Treatment Candles which have been carefully crafted with organic stress relieving oils to instantly relax your body and mind. The incredibly unique skin-nourishing formulas in both Neom blends work intensively to repair and protect dry, tired and stressed skin. This product couldn't be more perfect for giving your jet-lagged skin the attention it deserves. Simply light the candle for 15-45 minutes then apply the soothing and therapeutic pool of oil directly onto the skin. When used each day, the rich 100% natural oil blend will work to dramatically improve dehydrated and damaged skin. I can't get enough of this product or this brand, it's simply stunning. These candles also make a wonderful gift for that someone special in your life.
My mind is constantly active, I can't remember the last time I sat still and just enjoyed the moment. I think it was back in India a few months ago during a meditation session - the 'Instantly De-Stress' candle brought me back to my special space. I'm looking forward to trying out the 'Sleep' candle at some point in the near future.
Another common problem while flying is the bloating and I know this is going off topic but I also know many people suffer. Ask anyone I've been on a flight with, I usually spend most of the journey complaining about my 'faux pregnant stomach' - or in other words, severe bloating. There's no miracle cure, just be cautious of carbs and bring some peppermint tea onboard to settle and relax your tired tummy.
I can't stress it enough, the importance of nourishing your skin and body after so long up in the sky. Hopefully some of these skincare saviours will help you like they've helped me. Wishing you all safe journeys and enjoyable trips this summer. Don't forget your SPF!
